I could be wrong but not sure that most routers will be able to perform this video transcoding as efficiently due to a lack of a GPU. The Nvidia shield can handle video transcoding very efficiently due to the onboard Nvidia GPU. It runs great as a plex server with a 2TB USB 3.0 drive attached to the USB port. I have been running my plex server on my Nvidia Sheild model from 2017.

Transcoding is enabled by default, also audio streams or music can be transcoded as well.

Stock R9000 can do at least 480p for mobile, and a claim is similar performance to Netgear RN214. Roku doesn't support Kodi otherwise I'd try that for local media playback. The only thing that attempts to transcode is TrueHD audio and DTS-HD audio, so I simply change the Audio track to a non-lossless audio and everything direct streams perfectly smooth.ĭoing it without the need for transcoding is just like playing a video direct from your NAS with any generic media player.

My 4K Dolby Vision Sony TV is able to play all video types without transcoding.

You only need a powerful PC if the TV or device you're playing the content on cannot cope with the original video and has to transcode. Transcoding not 'disabled' as there is no direct setting for this, but have everything set as direct play, or original stream. Using mainly as a music server was frustrating enough.ĭon't misunderstand, I think Plex (and Tidal integration) is great but don't anticipate it will be a good experience, except (possibly) on powerful routers. I am not sure that transcoding was even an option on the NAS platform. Some video formats would not work - perhaps because of no transcoding. Unlike many Plex users, I rarely used it for video. Without transcoding, it was disabled correct?

Moved the server over to a Windows machine (AMD FX-8310) and am much happier. but wasn't really satisfactory - just not enough CPU horsepower. I ran a Plex server on a low-powered NAS for a while. All direct streaming, no transcoding, so if I can add it to my router, I can get rid of the Nvidia Shield. TV is connected to a Roku Ultra (new 4800 model) with Plex client. I have an R7800 and currently running Plex server on an Nvidia Shield 2019 (not connected to a TV, literally just used for the server. Personally, I just have DD-WRT and an adblock script, so I'd rather have Plex Server (or at least try it out) than any other add-ons, so it would be good to test it out. So it would depend on the user having any other items needed to be installed, as there will be no space for anything else. It should be able to fit on a 128MB flash size, as Plex Server is approx 78MB (depending on file integration) and DD-WRT is approx 30MB.

The R6400 and R7800 have 128MB flash size. That doesn't look good for the R7800 then. Maybe R9000, 512MB Flash size, I see an arm(armv7) source folder and that could be for Alpine AL-514. I exceeded the maximum build size for my R6400. I cannot find anything on R7800 running r46130 but cannot recommend this build, too many problems. A way to verify is flash of the past few releases and check file system or Web GUI, but may not exist.Ĭhangeset r45999 - " for testing, need to discuss with plex maintainers if they agree about integration"
